Introduction
In Qarma, there are two models of managing production units (production units in Qarma means factories or production sites).
- Delegated model. Each supplier has its own list of production units. If two suppliers use the same production unit, it will be present twice.
- Managed model. There is a total list of production units, and each supplier reference the ones they use.
Understanding the two models
The principle of model 1 is displayed below:

Three suppliers all use production unit B, and that it is present three times in the Qarma data.
The principle of model 2 is displayed below:

Production unit B is only present one time in the data, and all suppliers reference this production unit.
Model comparison
| Delegated model | Managed model | |
| Main benefit | Suppliers can manage all data themselves and add new production units and manage their information on their own | Audits, CAP and other data is only present one time in the data. This makes it easier to manage |
| Data integrations | No requirements | Data sent to Qarma needs to have production unit numbers or names that are unique across suppliers |
| Implications for audits and CAP | Always linked to suppliers | Can be linked to suppliers |
| Tiering | Not possible | Production units can be linked as upstream or downstream |
